This series proposes a representation of the city of São Paulo in a time of exception. In these days of confinement, the city presents itself in a way never seen before, both because of the absence of people and because of the unprecedented conditions of air quality, noise pollution and autumnal light. It has been possible to notice the urban structure with a degree of attention impossible on an ordinary day, full of stimuli and distractions. Even the colors of the city look different. Therefore, rather than the pandemic in the city, this series was interested in the city in the pandemic, trying to record a historical moment. Its dormant aspect can be understood as a dramatic testimony to this period in which we are all rethinking our role in society and in the world.
However, in these images, even though the city appears apparently naked, something deeper is hidden. São Paulo, the largest city in the country, notoriously known for its large flows of people and vehicles, is at this moment devoid of life. I believe in the personality, character and character of cities, as if they were people. In this sense, São Paulo is very sad and fragile, because its deep social problems prevent it from having the tranquillity necessary for the reflection that other cities around the world are doing. In this great Brazilian metropolis, the future has never been so uncertain and fearful. The horizon is a long period of economic, social and political problems.
Despite the beauty of this fall, with its golden afternoon lights, there is a false calm in the air, an unbearable silence that can mean either the expectation of a great liberation or an even greater tragedy.
